Problem Statement

In today's society, many people feel the need to not only write down their schedules, but to also input them into an electronic medium.

To solve this problem we propose Calvin Calendar. Calvin Calendar allows users to sync their handwritten planners with a digital calendar while still preserving their handwriting, thus creating a much more personal and intuitive planning system. In essence, Calvin creates a much more seamless interaction between tactile and electronic schedulers. It is a tangible user interface that provides a link between handwritten planners and their digital counterparts. Our soluction allows users to handwrite their schedules into a tangible notebook through a Livescribe pen. Once an event has been written into a user's notebook, it will update to Calvin Calendar where the events will post into a library and be added to select days.

Conceptual Design

For our conceptual design we wanted to place Calvin in a family environment.

Design Process

First Interface

After recieving feedback we decided to implement a number of changes. Rather than having multiple pages on the interface we came to the conclusion that we would have a single page, which displays the month. We will wanted to try to provide an ambient display to users to signify an upcoming event so this effect was also added. We added a library using XAML which will hold photos of events and allow users to drag the photos onto Calvin.

Second Interface

For our second interface and further reception of feedback we made the decision to change some of the fonts, and change user icons. In addition to these changes we altered our library to contain small lined post its that contain the uploaded events.

Artifacts

Artifacts 1.0

Our initial artifacts included the calendar, a livescribe pen, a livescribe notebook, and a token that you could also write on in order to upload certain documents to the main Calvin.

Artifacts 2.0

For our second set of artifacts we decided to use a surface application to create Calvin. We also are able to allow users to write a note within a livescribe notebook, upload these notes to evernote, and then connect evernote to the XAML with python.

Future Work

Going forward, we would like to...

Improve the communication between Evernote and the desktop for a more streamlined transition of information by moving Calvin off the Evernote development site and into production

Improve and add features to the surface application including multiple user accounts, displaying photos and notes on a separate layer, and incorporating ambient reminders
